About ActionAid recycling title bar

1. Did you know that an extraordinary amount of electricity is wasted by mobile phone chargers being left connected to the mains when they aren't charging phones? So make sure your family unplug their charger after the phone has been charged!

2. If you have rooms that are unoccupied for the majority of the time, then turn the heating off in those rooms.

3. Either use economy light bulbs, or lower wattage bulbs, where strong light is not really required.

4. Check hot water storage temperature and reduce thermostat to 60 degrees centigrade, it can save energy/money , its still hot enough for washing/showers and reduces the risk of scalding the family a real triple win.

Cartridges4Charity.co.uk splits 100% of its net profit between 3 highly deserving charities.

How Does It Work?
Simple! You send empty printer cartridges, or old mobile phones to us for free and these are then sold on to companies that reuse or recycle them - all net profit is split equally between three charities.

your cartridges are sold at competitive prices directly to cartridge refillers and the money-hungry middle-men are simply cut out

costs are kept low so over 50% of total revenue is profit (some others only manage around 10%!!!)

100% of this net profit from the sale of your cartridges and phones goes straight to the good causes concerned!

Recycling is a great way of raising funds for charity. By supporting Sense, not only are you making a difference to deafblind people across the country you are also making a tangible difference to the environment.

Mobile phones and printer cartridges account for a significant amount of waste. They fill landfills and contain numerous non-biodegradable and toxic chemicals, which leech into and destroy our land.

Cash for Old Mobile Phones

envirofone.com is the UK's first mobile phone trading platform that pays the general public to recycle their old mobile phones for cash.

All you need to do is look up your old mobile phone, see how much it is worth and then trade it in. Once you have done the trade online, envirofone will send you a welcome pack that includes a freepost envelope. Once the phone(s) is received they are tested and if they meet the terms and conditions, users are paid cash.

There are over 80 million old mobile phones lying around in drawers and cupboards and many are thrown away when they could be worth up to £100. Launched in March 2006, envirofone.com has now paid out over £2.6 million to users and over £500,000 in affiliates and charity payments.

mazumamobile.com is the UK's leading mobile phone online scheme which pays the general public and businesses to recycle their old mobile phones into cash.

Users can instantly find out how much their old mobiles are worth and place an order. We then post a welcome pack which includes a freepost bag within 24hrs. Once the mobiles are received, we check that they meet our simple t&c's and post a cheque payment within 7 days.

Why Mazuma?

We offer:
• Best online prices
• Fast 7 day payment
• Free & simple online process
• Free postage
• Extensive model range
• Working & Non-Working prices
• Only handset & battery required
• Friendly telephone support
• Environmentally friendly
• Excellent customer satisfaction

mazumamobile.com is fast becoming an online revolution

The average person in the UK upgrades their mobile phone every 18 months.

We estimate that 20 million handsets will be upgraded in the UK this year alone. However, very few people know they can sell mobile phones for cash. Old mobile phones are normally disregarded and left in a drawer.

We estimate that each UK household is home to at least 4 mobile phones worth on average £20 each. That equates to 50 million handsets, worth £1 Billion pounds, sitting in drawers gathering dust.

What happens when they are recycled?

Most schemes recover and re-use various parts from phones and their accessories. Mobiles contain several valuable materials and components, such as silver, which can be extracted and re-used. Some also contain substances that are highly toxic, such as cadmium.

Parts recovery may include:

  • Separate metals recovery (including precious and semiprecious metals): The mobile parts are ground up and useful metal content extracted. Metal can be extracted from batteries too.

  • Plastic recovery: energy-from-incineration is used to recover plastic from components. Outer body plastic may be granulated and reformulated for use in mouldings.

  • Recovery and downgrading of valuable components: e.g. flash memory devices.

  • Re-use of parts: Useful parts include aerials, battery connectors, PCBs (printed circuit boards), connectors including gold-coated edge contacts on PCBs, ICs (integrated circuits), keyboards, LCD screens, lenses, microphones, phone housings, screws, SIM card assemblies and speakers.

  • There are now over 80 million mobile phones in the UK, and they continue to grow in popularity.

  • Until recently there has been no easy safe way to dispose of old mobiles and they have been sent to landfill sites. However, there are now many easy-to-use recycling schemes.

  • Mobile phones also now come under the EU Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive and must be disposed of accordingly.

Computer Aid International logoComputer Aid International provides only the highest-quality, professionally refurbished computers for reuse in education, health and not-for-profit organisations in developing countries.

Computer Aid has shipped over 80,000 PCs to where they are most needed in more than 100 countries, making us the world's largest and most experienced not-for-profit supplier of ICT 4 Development.

Our work in the UK is to talk to businesses as they upgrade to the very latest technology and encourage them to donate their PCs to Computer Aid International for re-use in schools and community organisations in the developing world.

In the UK Computer Aid International provides a high-level decommissioning service to PC donors. As a result of our professional service tens of thousands of PCs have been donated to us. However, this figure is a drop in the ocean when research shows that there are close to 3 million PCs decommissioned in the UK every year.

What happens to the donated PCs?

All donated PCs will be thoroughly data-wiped to the highest standard. We are aware how important this is for all our donors and for this reason we have formed a partnership with the leading data removal specialist, and Ministry of Defence approved, market leaders Blancco.

Once the hard drives have been completely removed of data by one of our technicians, the PC will be fully refurbished and tested before it is boxed, ready for shipment to the developing world.

Computer Aid International has supplied PCs to over 5,000 organisations in the developing world. Listed below are just some of our developing world partners and projects.

Computers for Schools Kenya

World Links Zimbabwe

World Links Rwanda

British Council Cameroon

Christian Relief Development Association, Ethiopia

SchoolNet Malawi

SchoolNet Mali

Computer Education Trust, Swaziland

Fantsuam Foundation, Nigeria

CIDA University, South Africa

The success of our work over the past six years can be attributed to donations from individual PC owners as well as to donations from larger organisations. We recognise how important these individual donations are and also how difficult it can be to find somewhere locally to take your old PC. For this reason we have come up with an easy solution. You can either drop-off your computer personally at our workshop in London or we have organised a deal with Parcel2Go who offer door-to-door delivery UK-wide for just £9.75 per box.

ActionAid Recycling collect ink and toner cartridges, mobile phones and PDAs for recycling to raise funds for the charity ActionAid. ActionAid are a unique partnership of people who are fighting for a better world - a world without poverty.

ActionAid works in Africa, Asia and the Americas, listening to, learning from and working in partnership with over 13 million of the world's poorest people.

ActionAid Recycling was founded by ActionAid and is now an independent registered company. ActionAid Recycling pays to ActionAid ten percent of sales generated from donated ink and toner cartridges, PDAs and mobile phones.

In 2005 this equated to 75% of the business profits of ActionAid Recycling.

ActionAid Recycling also sell original-brand and compatible printer toner cartridges and new and reconditioned laser printers at GREAT PRICES. Click here for more information.

In the UK alone over 2 million printer cartridges are thrown away and 15 million mobiles are left, unwanted, each year! At the same time, one third of the world's children do not have enough food to live.

ActionAid Recycling reduce waste by collecting empty printer, photocopier and fax cartridges, and unwanted mobile phones; and reduce poverty by giving 80%, minimum, of our profits to ActionAid, the charity, who work with over 9 million of the world's poorest people.

recycling logoActionAid Recycling also recycles printer, fax and photocopier cartridges - recycling will cost you nothing - we provide freepost envelopes for your phones & cartridges. To get involved simply phone 0845 3100200 and ask to register. We'll then send you a free storage box or freepost envelopes for returning inkjets or mobile phones.

ActionAid Recycling can raise up to £22 from each phone that we recycle. A top model phone would pay for school uniforms for 5 Ghanaian children, or provide 4 Ethiopian students with learning materials for one year. The sale of an older model can feed one Ghanaian street child daily on a healthy diet.

We sell the phones to UK recyclers who refurbish them and sell them to countries where the landline infrastructure is poor. So your old phone could end up being used by someone in Africa, saving them a long trip to the nearest landline every time they need to make a phone call. It won't cost you a penny to recycle- we will provide you with a freepost envelope for your phone.

So, if your phone is one of the 90 million mobiles lying unused in the UK's offices and desk drawers, get in touch today:

Mobile Phone Appeal

Did You Know? Just 4% of mobile phones are recycled in the UK??

In plain terms millions of old, broken unwanted and unloved mobile phones are laying in cupboards and drawers gathering dust across the UK.

Such a waste when they CAN be put to good use!!!!

This is an appeal with a difference. A unique offer from Mercedes and Dixons. Will convert mobile phones into new vehicles. Just 2000 phones = One new Mercedes Sprinter Van which help us to help Children and Schools in disadvantaged countries.

Imagine living in a climate of -20C, and trying to get around with no shoes and limited clothing. Think of how it might feel to be so cold and also the pain, intense pain that comes from being exposed to such temperatures. That is how it is for some. Remember Chernobyl, the legacy lives on but even basic resources for schools and children remain scarce.

We need your help to change this situation. Phones for Vans will enable us to transport resources and volunteers to places of need. Daily we receive support requests Worldwide by the bucket load. Now an opportunity has arisen to tackle some of those requests, with your help.

2000 mobile phones or the equivalent of £30,000 are needed for the next modified vehicle.

So please don't just bin it, send them in. "Dead or Alive" We know they are out there. Phones, chargers, accessories, plus used ink jet and laser printer cartridges, all will help us to reach the target.

For further information, posters and collecting boxes.

The Recycling Appeal collects mobile phones, PDAs and printer cartridges for reuse and recycling, raising funds and helping the environment.

The Recycling Appeal has generated over £2 million for partner organisations since 1999.

At the Recycling Appeal, we believe in the power of recycling. Not only does recycling protect the environment, it changes lives. A big statement? Yes, but as we currently run more than 100 charitable or cause based recycling appeals, we think we’re on to something.

Strong Credentials

The Recycling Appeal is run by Redeem Plc, an award winning firm started in 1999 as Eurosource Europe. When Redeem realised that most used mobile phones and printer cartridges were being thrown in the bin we created the Recycling Appeal, a socially conscious collections programme that would help us influence customer behaviour while benefiting worthy causes. Through the Recycling Appeal Redeem has helped various organisations raise more than £2 million for good causes.

Positive Impacts

From Redeem’s Falkirk facility, printer cartridges and mobile phones are recovered, segregated and packaged, to either be sent on for end of life recycling or reuse throughout the world. By reusing and recycling the raw materials in these products, energy which would have been used to create new items is saved, the drain on natural resources is lessened and the amount of waste going to landfill is reduced. Redeem is proud to have diverted more than 2000 tonnes from landfill – that’s good news for all of us!

Prizes

Participating in a Recycling Appeal raises funds for your chosen organisation, helps the environment AND gives you opportunities to win fantastic prizes! See their latest prize offer
